    Progressive Complexity - Introduction

We are about to meet the most powerful and the most breathtakingly beautiful law of the universe. The law of Progressive Complexity has created the universe itself, and all that exists within it - including our Sun and the Earth, the whole teeming kaleidoscopic cornucopia of Life of our beautiful biosphere - and last but not least, our kind and selves --- and all of it out of the dust of stars.

It's an awesome law. Its power is all but infinite, and its dazzling beauty boggles the mind no end. It may well be called "The Law of All Creation". It has, after all, created the universe, as well as Life itself, including and our kind and selves - which is nothing to sneeze at by any standards - and has populated the universe with myriads of other biospheres and sentient races, differing from us only in form, according to local conditions.

Fortunately, it is also a majestically simple law, and it can be easily understood - even by the average 15 year-old. And once understood, it delivers much power into our hands. For we can use and employ it in almost all of our affairs. With it we can restore our biosphere to vibrant health, create beautifully stable climates, create a rich, abundant, completely poison-free and supremely healthy agriculture, and restore our kind and selves to all but unassailable health - all as described in these pages.

And we could even use it to create biospheres on other planets, if we want to. This would take a bit of time, actually quite a bit of time really, but given this law, we could do it.

But its most stunning consequences lie in the full implications of this law. We'll get into this a little later though, since the law of Progressive Complexity is the foundation of the awesome magnitude of the full implications.

the universal law of Progressive Complexity creates both

Growth, from the relative simplicity of a seed, egg or ovum - to the intricate complexity of a fully developed organism is a process of progressive complexity. So is creation of the great complexity of stars out of simple hydrogen clouds. So is the growth and evolution of the universe from the ultimate simplicity of a pin-point of pure energy - to its present astronomical complexity. So too is the evolution of Life from the relative simplicity of amoebae to the immense physical, chemical, biological and cognitive complexity of human beings.

Further, the creation of the elements - from the elementary simplicity of hydrogen to the 92-fold complexity of uranium - is also a process of progressive complexity. Indeed, since all elements more complex than hydrogen are created, via fusion of simple hydrogen, in stars - every star in the universe is a blazing factory of the progressive complexity of the elements.

And, here on the Earth, the process of photosynthesis - which creates the much higher complexity of carbohydrates from the relative simplicity of carbon dioxide and water - along with the oxygen we breathe - is also a pure process of progressive complexity.

For all of these reasons, and since this law creates the progressive complexity of all physical, chemical, biological, psychological and cognitive growth and evolution, as well as the progressive complexity of the elements and photosynthesis, I have chosen the term "progressive complexity" for being more accurate, descriptive and comprehensive.

"So," and as world famous physicist Paul Davies stated in his book, "The Cosmic Blueprint" (1988), "there exists something like a law of increasing complexity." The evidence - all over the universe, in us and all around us - is overwhelming and indisputable. It is as real as the vast complexity of the Earth under our feet, as real as the immense complexity of our teeming biosphere, of our home galaxy the 'Milky Way', and of the billions of other galaxies throughout the universe.

And indeed, there is. And as we shall see, the law of Progressive Complexity is a universal, a cosmic law. The full implications are stunning - to say the least.

Inexplicably and incomprehensibly though, and despite the overwhelming evidence all over the place - including the growth, existence and reality of our selves - our scientists have, at least so far, not recognized this universal law. This is because of the 'iron rule' of the law of entropy, which states that everything must decay. This is true, but this is only half of the whole picture. As we shall see, the law of Progressive Complexity ('ProgCom' from now on) is the 'flip side' - or 'the other side of the same coin', of the law of Decay, as so neatly illustrated by the ancient yin-yang symbol.

    GROWTH DECAY

The two - the laws of ProgCom and Decay - are the inseparable polarities of an indivisible whole. The following familiar little image is a neat illustration of how it works.

    GROWTH
    DECAY

Here, the up-cycle illustrates the progressive complexity of all growth and evolution; the down-cycle describes the process of decay; and the horizontal cycle stands for stability over time. Simple, elegant, beautiful, and powerful beyond all imagination. It also describes, after all, the comings and goings of universes!

Now then, the following is essentially scientific in nature, but there is no need to start quivering at the prospect of a lot of science. It is all as easy as 1 - 2 - 3, and well within the grasp of any 15 year-old.

Since the law of Progressive Complexity is inherent in the nature of energy - as it must - we'll begin with the first law of thermodynamics, and there discover the universal law of Change & Stability - an immensely vast and powerful law in itself. But not to worry, it's all as easy as the see-saw of our childhood days. Once we have this under our belt, we'll see how the law of Progressive Complexity arises simply, seamlessly, elegantly and ever so beautifully out of the law of Change & Stability. And then we'll know how the universe works.

It remains to be mentioned here that we are supposed to understand how the universe works; this is part and parcel of the ongoing evolution of our kind and selves. And the mind boggling beauty of it is that this fundamental law is known and understood by all highly evolved races throughout the universe.
