    What? - Lead in Seafood?

the most priceless gift - strapping health

Well, it seems there are all manner of inventive individuals out there - all trying to increase their profit a bit, with all kinds of develishly devious schemes, and in the best way they know how. What will be next? - brick dust in flour? Don't laugh, this has been done in India.

    Metal Detectors Used for Seafood

South Korean quarantine authorities are brandishing a new tool for inspecting imports of crabs and exotic blowfish -- metal detectors. Imports from China in recent weeks have shown up with lead pellets inserted in them, making them heavier and therefore more expensive

"We suspect the lead is being put into blue crab and blowfish to increase weight,'' a Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry official said on Wednesday. "As a result, we have intensified quarantine services and are using metal detectors.''

South Korean importers pay about 4,250 won ($3.83) per kg for crab and 7,880 won per kg for blowfish, a delicacy in South Korea as in other parts of Asia such as Japan. The ministry reported a one-week search at the ports of Pusan and Inchon uncovered 493 pounds of lead in 13,225 pounds of Chinese blowfish and 189 pounds of lead in 18,450 pounds of blue crab imported from China.
